This research evaluates thermal treatment, or hyperthermia, as a chemical-free method for managing Varroa mite infestations in honey bee colonies. While some manufacturers claim the process is harmless, data suggests that high temperatures can cause significant adult bee mortality and damage brood health, particularly depending on humidity levels and bee variety. Critical concerns are raised regarding the fertility of queens and drones, as heat exposure may degrade sperm viability and lead to hive failure. Field tests indicate that current thermal devices often achieve only a partial kill rate, primarily affecting mites on adult bees rather than those protected within capped brood. Ultimately, the author concludes that while hyperthermia offers a non-toxic alternative for small-scale beekeepers, its inconsistent efficacy and labor-intensive nature remain significant challenges.
