Assessing Bee Syrup Quality Through Titratable Acidity Testing

Beekeepers must monitor syrup quality to ensure it remains safe for honeybees, as degraded feed can become toxic. Testing involves measuring the initial pH and, more importantly, performing acidity titrations to see how much the syrup resists pH changes. A critical safety threshold is defined by whether more than 5 milliliters of base solution is required to neutralize the liquid, as high acidity forces bees to work harder to process the food. Factors like high storage temperatures and extended storage time significantly accelerate spoilage, whereas refrigeration and clean containers help maintain stability. While visual signs like color changes or frothing can indicate issues, they are not always reliable, making laboratory testing essential for questionable feed. Beekeepers are advised to discard or dilute compromised syrup and avoid using it as winter feed to prevent colony loss.
