The University of Guelph Honey Bee Research Centre uses Thorah Island as a specialized mating station to refine the genetics of Buckfast bees. The process involves transporting mini mating nucleus colonies to the island, where queens are eventually harvested, marked, and distributed to beekeepers across Ontario.
