This presentation introduces a three-year research initiative funded by the Ontario government to advance indoor overwintering techniques for honeybee nucleus colonies. Lead researchers and beekeepers are collaborating to test a specialized insulated facility equipped with the Gerard feeder, a unique tool that delivers syrup directly to the winter cluster. The project aims to reduce dependence on imported queens by developing best management practices that help small colonies survive the harsh Canadian winter. To ensure results represent the province's genetic diversity, the team is seeking contributions of locally raised colonies from the beekeeping community. Ultimately, the study seeks to improve industry sustainability through public field tours, genetic testing, and the potential for winter queen banking.
