This technique aims to stall the queen's egg-laying and suppress the colony's urge to create swarm cells when scheduled queen deliveries are delayed. While the treatment also serves as a mite deterrent, the primary goal in this context is to buy time by curtailing the bees' rapid growth during an early spring. The process involves placing the gel between hive boxes to ensure activation during cool weather, effectively resetting the colony's momentum. Observations following the application suggest that this strategy successfully curtails swarming without permanently harming the hive's long-term productivity. Additional management includes equalizing colonies by moving frames of sealed brood from overpopulated hives to smaller ones.
