Beekeepers utilize swarm prevention techniques to stop honey bees from leaving the hive, which preserves honey production and maintains colony strength. Crowding and a lack of queen pheromone typically trigger this natural instinct to relocate, leading bees to build specialized queen cells. To counteract this, keepers increase hive volume by adding extra boxes called supers to relieve congestion. Managing the colony also involves inspecting frames for developing larvae and occasionally clipping the queen’s wings to delay a potential departure. If signs of swarming are found, the beekeeper may remove queen cells and temporarily cage the queen to reset the colony’s focus toward nectar collection.
