In Ontario, beekeepers are legally obligated to report any sightings of the Small Hive Beetle to the provincial government to help track its spread. While quarantines and hive destruction may seem like intuitive solutions, they are often ineffective because the beetles can travel long distances independently and such measures could devastate the commercial pollination industry. Instead, the current strategy emphasizes proactive prevention and the maintenance of vigorous, healthy colonies through superior management practices. The Ontario Beekeepers’ Association is actively developing a mitigation plan focused on education, biosecurity, and the use of mechanical controls like freezing equipment. By shifting the focus from total eradication to informed management, the industry aims to protect honey production and pollination services while adapting to this pest. This collaborative approach ensures that beekeepers have the tools and information necessary to limit the beetle's impact on their livelihoods.
