To address rising bee colony losses, researchers and beekeepers are exploring ozone fumigation as a method to sanitize used hive equipment. This chemical process utilizes oxidizing molecules to neutralize dangerous pathogens, pests like the wax moth, and various pesticide residues found in wax combs. Unlike harsher chemicals, ozone is considered environmentally friendly because it naturally reverts to oxygen without leaving harmful traces. Field tests using a large-scale fumigation chamber demonstrated that treated hives supported healthier population growth when compared to untreated equipment. While the wood in hive boxes can absorb much of the gas, reducing its overall efficiency, the technology offers a promising way to biosecurely recycle materials. However, experts maintain that this treatment should supplement, rather than replace, the regular culling of old frames to ensure long-term hive health.
