Since the late 1980s, the Varroa mite has revolutionized beekeeping by parasitizing honey bees and acting as a primary vector for deadly viruses. While mites physically weaken bees by feeding on their fat body organs, the pathogens they carry—such as deformed wing virus—often pose a greater threat to colony survival. Emerging research highlights how certain viruses can even manipulate bee behavior and social immunity to spread more effectively between hives. To combat these evolving threats, scientists are exploring RNA interference technology and genetically engineered gut bacteria to prime the honey bee's immune system. Despite these high-tech prospects, current management still relies on monitoring treatment thresholds and using established chemical controls to prevent the spread of resistant mite populations. Maintaining low mite levels is essential not only for individual hive health but also for protecting the broader beekeeping community from highly virulent disease outbreaks.
